Top Five Films of 2013
- Pankaj Kumar Sinha           Let us know what you think about this article

2013 saw Bollywood moving in the right direction, with different type of cinema being attempted by some of the brave film makers. If the trend continues, this could arguably be the best period for the Hindi film industry. Bollywood is also taking steps to technically match Hollywood standards. In another ten years, Bollywood should be able to make movie like Avatar or Titanic. We would like to see our A List of Stars coming out of their cocoon and do some brave films. This will be real good step forward for Indian film Industry. Our top actress should look beyond usual 5 scenes and 3 songs in a masala movie. We would like to see our heroines challenging themselves and playing stronger characters. We also need our usual dose of masala films. But we need to bring fine balance of different kind of films. Everyone from film makers, actors, story writers, cinematographers, singers, music directors, fight masters, etc. has to make their contribution and taking the film industry forward to next level.

We had seen many wonderful films this year. But these are my top Five films of 2013:

  1. Ranjhanaa: The south Indian star Dhanush has made wonderful debut in this film. He doesn’t have typical looks of a Bollywood hero but he is one of best acting talents in Bollywood. His performance as an actor ranged beautifully from teenager to manhood. Sonam Kapoor also surprised in a role with grey sides. Sonam has grabbed it well and made this character her own. This film has some memorable dialogues. The music by A.R.Rahman has been composed well and it is a no surprise. The film maker Anand L Rai has woven a nice story in entertaining manner.

  2. Kai Po Che: This movie is a good follow up after ‘Rock On’ for the film maker Abhishek Kapoor. It is based on Chetan Bhagat Novel ‘The three mistakes of my life’. The film has come out even better than the book. We saw a new star in the making - Sushant Singh Rajput, who has combination of both looks and acting talent. He is the life of the film and well supported by Rajkumar Yadav and Amit Sadh. The film has best screenplay of the year and it keeps you hooked to your seats.

  3. Bhaag Mikha Bhaag: Farhan Akhtar has surprised us with Bhaag Mikha Bhaag. We thought him to be an actor suited to city bred characters but he proved everybody wrong. He has gone into skin of character as Mikha Singh. With this film, Farhan has proved that he is a true all rounder of Bollywood. This movie has been quite inspiring and well made by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra.

  4. D Day: Nikhil Advani has made a great comeback with gritty drama ‘D Day’. This film reveals the life of a spy. Rishi Kapoor proving yet again (after Agneepath, Aurangazeb)that he can perform just as good in a negative role. Irfan Khan has an amazing screen presence. You can feel the vulnerability of the character played by him. Huma Qureshi and Arjun Ramphal have done good job of their roles.

  5. Chennai Express: We also need masala films like Chennai Express. This Rohit Shetty film is quite entertaining. This may be a Shahrukh Khan Film but it belongs to Deepika Padukone with her superb comic timing. She has done a great job in this comic role. This film may not win awards but it will stay in people’s heart.
