Sequels are a dangerous territory
- Pankaj Kumar Sinha           Let us know what you think about this article

Sequels to successful, cult films are a dangerous territory for film makers. The expectations will be higher and there will be comparison with previous films. The audience will expect more and come with the mindset that the film will offer them better experience than the last one. Rajkumar Hirani is the only film maker whose both films in Munnabhai Series received same love and affection from audience and critics. How can we forget 'jaadoo ki jhaapi' and 'Gandhigiri'? Sanjay Dutt as Munnabhai and Arshad Warsi as Circuit are cult characters in India cinema. We would love to see them back on the screen.

These days, lot of production houses have announced thefor sequel of their successful films. Every film does not need a sequel. Each film is telling a different story and has different characters. The sequel should not be made to encash the popularity of the previous film for monetary reasons. According to me, 'Dhoom' with John Abraham as suave villain with fast bikes in the first part was the best of Dhoom series but others may have a different opinion. The emotional quotient was more in 'Dhoom 2' and 'Dhoom 3'. The villains were shown more as grey and the heroes became more of supporting characters to villain in the next two films. The heroes could have replaced with stronger personality star.

'Dabangg 2' was the biggest disappointment of the lot. It looked like a frame to frame copy of 'Dabangg'. Director Arbaaz Khan fooled the audience. As a film maker, you need to put a lot of effort during your writing stage and present something different and bigger for your audience. It was clear encashment of popularity of previous film. We need to learn from Hollywood on making sequels for successful films. We wait for the sequels with great anticipation in Hollywood.

Rakesh Roshan has been successful with superhero 'Krissh' series. He attempts to make something bigger with each film and uses advanced technologies well. He is a brave film maker and takes good calculated risks while making his filmsin the budget of his films. He is one of the torch bearers of Indian cinema. Rakesh Roshan has played a very important role in success of his actor son Hrithik Roshan's career. The sequels to comedy films have been pretty successful at the box office. The 'Housefull' series with Akshay Kumar and Ritesh Deshmukh has been a popular franchise.

'Rock On' was a successful and cult film based on a rock band. It was liked both by audience and critics. Arjun Rampal won the national award for best supporting actor. The famous film maker of films like 'Dil Chahtha Hai', 'Lakshya' and 'Don' debuted as actor and singer in the film and got lots of appreciation for his performance. The music was very popular. The sequel did not live up to the expectations and there was more focus on Farhan Akhtar's character in the film. The other characters of Arjun Ramphal and Purab Kohli have not been given enough substance. The music of the film is the biggest disappointment. For a musical film, if the music is average then it is a big crime. The sequels are a dangerous territory for cult classic films.
